Newtownards missed out on the road building schemes of the 60’s and early 70’s leaving it without a bypass and only a short section of throughpass. Work has now started on a new “distributor” road to connect the Belfast road to the Portaferry Road via the Comber Road. According to published figures, about 80% of the total cost will be met by the developer of a new shopping centre. The photo shows the section of road from the Jubilee Road to the Comber Road (lower left to middle top) with the continuation to the Portaferry Road at the top.
