Captain Jones (1668-1743) was commended for bravery in naval engagements with the French in the early C18. Other members of his family are buried in this very ornate but much damaged grave in the churchyard of St Matthias, Poplar High Street. Note: the blue flowers in the foreground are Comfrey (Symphytum officinalis) a naturalised plant originally introduced to this country for its medicinal use in healing wounds and fractures.
