"Almost immediately after the outbreak of the 1st World War, in October 1914 the young men of Rayne responded to the recruitment effort and enlisted. They assembled on Rayne Hall Green and it was on this spot that, in October 1920, the present Memorial Cross was unveiled, in the presence, amongst others, of the survivors.
