This is one of the original solid iron shafts that carried the water wheel and transferred the power to the mill machinery. The shaft has been cast and the parting line between the cope and the drag of the mould can be seen. A cast structure of this size would not result in a true cylinder so rectangular pads were cast on the shaft which could be machined to give a mounting for the wheel concentric with the axis of rotation. The shaft is now part of the wall round the dining terrace of the restaurant that now occupies the mill.
