Across the Common

The Common is a large open area on the east side of Saffron Walden. Nearby, but out of picture to the right are the remains of the castle. In the medieval period jousts were held on the Common. The Common is now the freehold property of the Town Council. This view was taken because of the somewhat surreal view of a giant crane towering over the town and rivalling the spire of St Mary's. A new clothes shop is being built in the town centre, which still has its medieval street layout. The only way the bring in materials is over the rooftops via a crane set up in a small square in the middle of other shops.
