'1916 / Hillhouse P.F. & I. Society / Fartown Branch' is inscribed in the gable. This was the Hillhouse Perseverance Friendly and Industrial Society Limited; they seem to have had about eight branches, surprising as Hillhouse is only a local neighbourhood name.
