John Warden Page, writing 111 years ago, described Port Gaverne as ‘ a pleasant little inlet with a sandy beach at the head, about which stand a few whitewashed cottages and me teste a very snug little inn .. When I was last there, a coaster lay at anchor waiting for her cargo of slate from the great quarries at Delabole ..’ But the railway took the trade and Port Gaverne suffered [Source: John Lloyd Warden Page.
