The wooden gates and small sub-station to the left mark what was the entrance to De La Salle College; A catholic grant maintained grammar school founded in around 1921. The core of the teaching staff consisted of about six members of the De La Salle brotherhood. In 1977, following the full "comprehensivisation" of catholic secondary education in Sheffield, the school was merged with the largest catholic secondary school in Sheffield - St Paul's together they became All Saints and before long the De La Salle site was sold-off. Despite a desperate petition organised in my last year at the school (1976) the outstanding contribution of the De La Salle brothers to education in Sheffield is now no more.
