Afon Pelenna flows from the right to join Afon Afan at Pontrhydyfen. The Afan valley flowing down from the east (LHS) takes a sharp turn southwards at the confluence before continuing its journey downstream through Port Talbot and entering the Bristol Channel at Aberafan (Aberavon).
