This calls itself an 'independent' Methodist church, meaning the congregation decided at some point not to join the Methodist union. It was founded c.1796, with this building dating from 1859. It stands on the site of the green of the former 13th century Augustinian (Austin) Friary – hence the name ‘Friars Green.’ The congregation now worships in the former Sunday school next door, so this building is presumably more of a church hall.
