Crompton Way, part of the A58 Bolton ringroad, was named after Samuel Crompton, Bolton born and bred, who invented the spinning mule which transformed the cotton spinning industry in Lancashire. The slate roofed house on the left middle ground was built as the gatehouse to Watermillock, a mansion built for Thomas Thwaites, a prominent industrialist in the town. Watermillock, across the road from the gatehouse, is now a restaurant/carvery.
