'Rolling Moon' Artwork, Pipewellgate, Gateshead

This work is a massive 27 metre span made of steel, which reaches 11 metres in height and supports a spun steel ball 1.3 metres in diameter. By the artist Colin Rose it was originally created for Gateshead's site at the 1988 Glasgow Garden Festival but was subsequently relocated to this site in 1990. The work distills the idea of the moon's dominant effect on the oceans' tides and its influence on the whole of maritime history with the great lunar force encompassing the earth symbolised by the massive steel span.
