One of two railways once serving the fen town of Ramsey, the branch opened in 1889 and was operated jointly by the Great Northern and Great Eastern Railways, leaving the St Ives to March route just north of Somersham Station. Ramsey was also served by a Great Northern branch from Holme on the East Coast Main Line, but there was no physical connection between the two terminal stations. There was one intermediate station on the line, at Warboys. Passenger services were withdrawn in 1930, but freight trains continued to run until 1956. At this point, just west of the Parkhall Road overbridge, the cutting is now permanently flooded, giving it the appearance of a canal or river.
