Partial collapse of the city walls

In 2007 a brick wall that stood against the sandstone city walls began to bulge so action was taken to demolish it carefully. Part of the remaining brick wall can be seen in the centre of the photo. Subsequently part of the ancient wall has collapsed and a section of the walls near the Eastgate has been closed for expert investigations to be carried out. There are diversions around the collapsed area.
