National Cyclists' Memorial, Meriden

"TO THE LASTING MEMORY OF THOSE CYCLISTS WHO DIED IN THE GREAT WAR 1914 - 1919" A plaque affixed to the other side remembers cyclists killed in the Second World War. This memorial was unveiled on the 21st May 1921 by the Lord Chancellor, Lord Birkenhead, in the presence of over 20,000 people. The obelisk of Cornish granite remembers all cyclists killed in the war - cycling was an enormously popular sport and recreation in the early 20th century - not just those who served as scouts and messengers in the Cycle Corps.
