Rhys ap Gruffydd was said to have inaugurated the Welsh national eisteddfod at the town's castle in 1176. This stone circle dates from 1976 when the eisteddfod was again held here to mark the 800th anniversary of the tradition. The central stone acts as the throne for the winning bard.
