The plaque on Image C.R.D.C. was the Chesterton Rural District Council, the administrative authority for this area between 1894 and 1974. Council housing in Britain was launched by the 1919 Housing Act, which attempted to provide "homes fit for heroes to live in". Local authorities were required to provide schemes to achieve this, and central government provided financial subsidies.
