Arbroath Abbey is looked after by Historic Environment Scotland (HES), which is the lead public body responsible for caring for, protecting, and promoting Scotland's historic environment, including famous sites like Arbroath Abbey. Today, the western side of Arbroath Abbey lies close to the High Street with its shops, offices and houses, while the eastern part lies in green and leafy surroundings, as seen in the photo. The dimensions of the ruined cruciform church at Arbroath Abbey measure 84 m in length by 49 m in width, while the larger scheduled area is of irregular shape and spans a maximum of 250 m by 136 m. Beyond that, the original perimeter walls were much larger, with the north wall being 232 m and the south wall being 146 m in length. The height of the central pillars in the abbey is given at 137 m, and the diameter of the O window is approximately 3.6 m.
