Coal hole plate in the pavement on the south side of the City Hall. The plate is inscribed: HAYWARD'S PATENT / C 14 / SELF-LOCKING / BOROUGH LONDON' The City Hall was constructed 1903-09, therefore it is reasonable to assume that the plate also dates from this period. Hayward Brothers of Borough, London were in business from circa 1783 and ceased trading in the 1970s.
