This refurbished property, together with the adjoining fields is marked as Five Intakes on the large scale OS map, which is odd as there appear to be only four 'intake' fields here. Maybe the fifth is a separate field further to the east. 'Intakes' with cottages are quite common in Swaledale and are often associated with the lead miners, who usually found it hard to make a living simply from mining, so were allowed to take in some land from the moor for small scale farming.
