A sea wall runs from Minnis Bay in a westerly direction to Reculver protecting the lowlying land which formed the bed of the Wantsum Channel, a sea channel which made Thanet an island in Roman and medieval times. Much of the land is 2 metres above sea level and would be subject to flooding in storm surges such as happened in the 1953 floods. The eastern part of the wall is known as the Northern Sea Wall. It forms part of the Thanet Coastal Path, the English Coast Path and the Viking Coastal Trail.
