Dating back to at least 1783 on this site, it was called "The Malt Shovel", between 1841 and 1848 it was "The Old Malt Shovel", by 1851 it was "The Bricklayers' Arms" and by 1867 "The Spread Eagle". It closed c.2021 and is now the Yemen Heaven restaurant. (Information from Hugh Murray: "A Directory of York pubs 1455-2004"; Voyager, 2004).
