John Snow College, Durham is named for a doctor of that name who when in practice in Soho, London during an outbreak of cholera in 1854 managed to narrow down the source of the infection to a water pump on Broad Street. He persuaded the authorities to remove the pump handle so preventing the drawing of water from that source. That explains the display of the model pump along the roadway. The flow of water from it is replicated by a number of fixed rods. Presumably the pump can be removed to allow vehicles to move along the road when required.
