Coal is often referred to as ‘Black Gold’. This memorial to 114 miners who lost their lives in a mining accident at the Cymmer colliery, Porth, is located in the grounds of Insole Court, Cardiff. It expresses the bitterness felt by many at the exploitation of the valleys workers for the enrichment of wealthy mine owners in the city. Insole Court was under construction in 1856 when the accident occurred. James Insole and the mine management were exonerated from the charge of ignoring safety warnings of the risk of explosion.
