Brinklow remembers the sacrifice of war as the neighbouring city of Coventry does, in a hopeful spirit of rebuilding international friendship and co-operation out of the ruins. The peace doves cut out of plastic milk bottles emphasise this. The flag commemorates Victory in Europe Day, eighty years ago in May 1945. The banner behind the memorial, meanwhile, is an expression of NIMBY sentiment: Rugby Borough Council, the local authority, says Brinklow should accept more housebuilding, which the village does not want.
