This line originally connected Gobowen with Welshpool and provided a link to Oswestry. Passenger services ceased in 1966 but quarry traffic continued to use the line for more than 20 years after that. The track is still in situ but badly overgrown and Cambrian Heritage Railways has a long-term aspiration to restore the route into Gobowen station. The link to Oswestry received Government approval in 2023 as part of the Restoring Your Railway fund, but this scheme was scrapped the following year.
