On the left-hand gatepost at the entrance to Hungerford Memorial Garden are inscribed the names of the sixteen people who lost their lives on August 19th, 1987 - in what is usually known as The Hungerford Massacre. They were killed without reason by gun toting local man Michael Ryan who later shot himself dead in the local secondary school where he himself had been a pupil.
