The houses on First, Second, Third and Fourth Avenues were built as the then Borough of Nottingham began to expand northwards after the 1845 Inclosure Act, and some years before the rest of the streets of red-brick houses of various sizes and classes in Sherwood Rise and Forest Fields, which occupied land north of The Forest which in the 1860s was still open country as far as Basford.
