The photo looks south from the junction of Conveth Place and the High Street at some of the sandstone buildings that are typical of older buildings in Laurencekirk. While Aberdeenshire is famous for its use of granite as a building material, Laurencekirk was in Kincardineshire until that county was abolished as an administrative area in 1975 and became part of Aberdeenshire in 1996. Despite now being part of Aberdeenshire, the use of sandstone for most older buildings is a reminder of the cultural heritage of the Mearns.
