According to CAMRA, this is a 17th century inn (and therefore perhaps surprisingly not statutorily listed), called the New Inn until 1939. Local historian Malcolm Bull explains that this was because the licence was transferred here from the Murgatroyd's Arms, Luddenden when it closed. Murgatroyd is very much a Calderdale family name, which Bull interprets as meaning 'a clearing by the road to the moor'.
