A sham. A travesty of a mockery of a sham, but also, in the opinion of architectural historian Andor Gomme, "the best of all the early fake castles in Britain". Built c1764, probably by William and Thomas Paty. The eyecatching building material is slag from William Reeve's brass foundry, for whom it was built. This is pleasingly mixed with rubble and limestone. Grade I listed. Improbably it has been a pub for some time, the (Black) Castle.
