First shown on the Ordnance Survey Six-Inch Map published in 1898 these steep stairs, which are seen here from Little Bedford Street, connected Lower Bedford Street with what was then known as East Ropery Banks. The stairs were named after the handsome Grieve's Building which abuts the stairs on the left hand side facing upwards. The stairs from below can be seen at https://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/7724322.
