The Old Thatched Cottage, Weston-Super-Mare

This claims to be the oldest building in Weston, although all that is known about the site in 1774 is that there was a primitive hut here occupied by a man called Light. In 1791, the cottage was built by the Reverend William Leeves for use as a holiday home; Revd Leeves is commemorated with a blue plaque describing him as a soldier, poet, musician and Rector of Wrington - as well as composer of Auld Robin Gray. After various changes of ownership it became The Promenade Café in 1920, changing its name to The Old Thatched Cottage Café in 1954. Five years later the lease was acquired by the family who still run it as a restaurant.
