A common edible plant (sometimes described as a weed) which can be eaten as cooked greens or as salad leaves. It has a variety of names - sauce-alone, Jack-by-the-hedge and so on - which indicates that it has been well-known to country folk over the ages as a useful free vegetable. More recently it has been used as an ingredient for pesto.
