It's believed there has been a settlement at or near Carlops since long before medieval times and the ancient Norman family, the Ramsays, had long association with the area. Christianity also came early and one pious man Prior Abernethy of Carlops helped the Scots army navigate a safe route to the Roslin in 1303. Perhaps the most famous of the Ramsay Clan was Sir Alexander de Ramsay, one of Scotland's great patriots who was one of the greatest generals during the reign of King David II, of Scots.
