The Fishermen's Mission supports active and former fishermen, sea-going staff working in the UK aquaculture industry, and migrant fishermen working on UK vessels. Their team provide a 24-hour emergency response to any fishing vessel working in UK waters, assisting with injury, or loss at sea. The Blue Plaque commemorates Henry Howard who was a retired fisherman and key figure behind the nearby Fiddler's Green Memorial https://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/5835944, which honours fishermen lost at sea. He was the vice chairman of the North Shields Fishermen's Heritage Project and the memorial was inspired by his granddaughter's question about the lack of such a memorial in North Shields. The plaque is attached to the outside wall of the mission.
