Seagate Castle, Town House of the Earls of Eglinton - Irvine

This castle is a fortified mansion house, which was built in 1565 by Hugh Montgomerie, 3rd Earl of Eglinton. This was the town house for Hugh and his wife Agnes Drummond. Their family arms can be seen on the ceiling bosses inside the front doorway. The castle overlooks the oldest street in Irvine, which was once the main route between the town and the old harbour at Seagatefoot, which by 1606, was useless and abandoned due to silting. It is recorded that Mary Queen of Scots visited the castle on 1st August 1563 in the castle. The 3rd Earl of Eglington was one of her most faithful adherents and he is said to have entertained the Queen and her four Marys: Mary Seton, Mary Beaton, Mary Fleming,
