The distant background of central Manchester is visible from higher ground on Ringway Golf Course, at Hale Barns. As the crow flies, this is 8 miles to the north. Ringway was once a small, ancient hamlet, a short distance to the east, on the Hale to Wilmslow road. After WWII, it found itself on the edge of a developing airport (named 'Ringway') which became Manchester International. Originally, telephone numbers in the Hale area had the designation 'Ringway'. The 18 hole golf course was first developed, after WWI, by famous designer Harry Colt.
