Facing Folly Road. The following is based on information on the school's website: The school was established in 1988 as the first Welsh-medium school in the old Gwent area. For its first three years, as Ysgol Gyfun Gwynllyw, it was in the old house of Ysgol Fabanod Abercarn but soon became too big for the building. As one of the fastest growing schools in Wales, a larger building was needed and so the school was relocated to Trevethin, a suburb of Pontypool. The school's pupils are taught entirely in Welsh. They come from a range of Welsh-medium schools in Torfaen, Blaenau Gwent and Monmouthshire such as Ysgol Gymraeg Cwmbran, Ysgol Panteg, Ysgol Bryn Onnen, Ysgol Gymraeg Bro Helyg and Ysgol Gymraeg y Fenni. The aim is to immerse pupils in the Welsh language and enable them to be taught entirely in Welsh as their native language. With the growth of Welsh education locally, the primary phase of the school was built between 2019 and 2022. Now (2025), Ysgol Gymraeg Gwynllyw is a 3 to 19 year old school, the first all-age school in South East Wales.
