This public house is better known as the birthplace of renowned architect John Dobson who designed a plethora of private houses, churches and public buildings during his lifetime, mainly in the North East of England, including Newcastle Central Station. Born here in 1787 John's father was the publican of this establishment as well as an affluent market gardener. At the time this area was well-known for its orchards and nurseries somewhat different from how the area is today.
