The orange coloured sandstone which makes up this area is often seen exposed in cuttings like the one here. It's quite soft, and over time roads have worn down into it, although landslips like the one on the left of the picture are not particularly a problem. As for why such an orange rock is called Greensand, that's down to chemistry. More about that on https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lower_Greensand_Group
