This lodge on Castle Street is the last part of the original Mere Union Workhouse. Beyond used to be the town institution, designed by George Gilbert Scott in 1835. Having served its purpose and later becoming a session hall, the site was largely cleared in 1968-69; it is now developed for residential occupation. Grade II listed.
