This archway passes beneath a disused railway line between Scotswood Road and the riverside walkway. Water Street is of historical significance as a route for goods and workers, including those from the Armstrong Works (formerly the Elswick Works) and the Elswick Leather Works (also known as Richardson's Tannery). Tanks and other goods from the Armstrong Works would travel up this street to Scotswood Road and onwards to their final destination.
