A Victorian community hall opened in 1887. According to this Wikipedia entry https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mitcham_Vestry_Hall it was described at the time as " a red brick blot"...which had..."ruined for ever the picturesqueness of Mitcham of old", a judgement which might now seem just a bit harsh considering what the imminent 20th century brought to the area. The large black doorway nearest the camera was originally for a fire engine.
