No. 23 Park Road (two doors to the left of the postman) has a blue plaque erected in 1953 by London County Council and bearing the inscription: JOSÉ DE SAN MARTÍN (THE LIBERATOR) 1778-1850 ARGENTINE SOLDIER AND STATESMAN stayed here. José de San Martín was born in Yapeyú on what is now Argentina. After fighting against Napoleonic France in the Peninsular War in Spain, San Martín moved to London, where he met South American supporters of independence from Spain. In 1812, he sailed to Buenos Aires, where he led forces that liberated Argentina, Chile and Peru from Spanish royal rule. He subsequently returned to Europe.
