The Masjid or mosque is named after the place of residence of a Sufi pir or saint, Ghamkol Sharif near Kohat, in northern Pakistan. This holy man, Zinda Peer Sahib has followers in several countries, especially in the UK. Migrants from Pakistan and Kashmir held religious meetings in Sparkhill from the late 60s and used a former engineering workshop on Golden Hillock Road as a mosque from 1983. The current mosque was built on this site from 1992-97. This information is drawn from the mosque website https://gsmosque.org/our-history/ and from Wikipedia https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ghamkol_Shariff_Masjid .
