These growing Friesian and Holstein heifers will be joining the milking herd when they have had their first calves. Each heifer has an identical plastic tag in both ears. This means that if one tag gets dislodged, the farmer can still be sure of the identity of the animal. Each animal has a cow passport with the tag number which will accompany it to the new farm if it is sold. In the distance you can see woodland with trees just beginning to come into leaf now that it is early May. There is also a striped, recently-rolled field where the farmer probably plans to make hay or silage.
