View along Bank Street. The cathedral is currently (2024) undergoing major restoration work. Built between 1844 and 1848 to designs of Matthew Ellison Hadfield, it was one of the first 4 churches to be elevated to cathedral status following the re-establishment of Roman Catholic dioceses in 1852. The spire rises to 240 feet. Listed Grade II*.
