Porthcurno is strongly associated with telegraphy, with a large number of telegraph cables (and latterly fibre optics) landing on the beaches here from all parts of the globe. During the war, this became vital communications which were potentially vulnerable to attack, so the facilities were moved into bunkers by digging tunnels into the cliff. This is the clifftop above the bunkers, which can be accessed by the emergency stairwell.
