The parish name probably means "church of the Virgin", but the church is dedicated to the obscure 6th-century Welsh saint Cristiolus. The church enclosure is circular (except from a bit eaten away on the north boundary) and typical of very early (6th century?) foundation, perhaps on a pre-christian site. However, the church was rebuilt in 1883, and shows little earlier detail.
